  28. Older movies were shot in a number of aspect ratios, _none_ of
  29. which corresponds exactly to 16:9.  They range from 4:3 (same as
  30. 16mm, same as video) to _over_ 2:1 (forget the name of this one,
  31. early widescreen process).  "Letterbox" is the way TV presents
  32. them to avoid the "pan & scan" ugliness of stuffing a widescreen
  33. film into a 4:3 TV aspect ratio.  I'm sure some of the film guys here
  34. will be happy to supply the names for the widescreen processes, I
  35. know of Cinemascope, Todd-AO, Cinerama, and I'm sure there
  36. were more yet that I have forgotten.  Happy viewing!
